Sketching the Spirit of the Lunar New Year: Reportage Illustrations from New York's Chinatown

Kevin Zych

Every year, one of my personal highlights is visiting Chinatown to draw the lion dancers perform during the Lunar New Year celebrations. Their rhythmic movements, the excitement of the crowds, and the constant flow of confetti all lend themselves to quick, vibrant sketches. Often I'm able to make a whole collection in a short time.

While the following images constitute a small, personal project, the process I followed mirrors my professional work. Given there are often variables I can't control–movement, poor weather, etc.–it's helpful to practice drawing on location as often as possible. Plus, it's fun!
