New York University: Lessons on Leadership

To give their incoming MBA students an unforgettable first impression, NYU asked me to make large-scale drawings during a series of seminars on professional leadership.

Using descriptions the students provided in real time, the illustrations below were made to supplement a case study about Mt. Everest Hikers and a follow-up conversation on the meaning of corporate responsibility.

A Strategy for Speed

With only five or ten minutes to make a drawing–either of a mountain climber or an entire 30-person classroom–having adaptive drawing strategies is key.

By capturing specific gestures and props instead of perfect facial features, students were able to recognize themselves in even the loosest drawings. "That's me!" One student said, pointing to a drawing. "That's my Stanley Tumbler!"
